More than 113 000 people signed petition called " Stop uranium mining in Slovakia". The Parliament and Members of Environment Committee supported the
petition and also the next steps of Slovakia Greenpeace campaign: to change three of our main laws
connected to mining.
There is 15 sites in Slovakia where uranium ore can be found and there is also
agreement on prospecting it. Slovakian legislation Acts are so weak that
is very cheap and easy for foreign company ( who come mainly form Canada
and UK) to mine.
A Greenpeace activist from Slovakia comments: "We believe from the geological, environmental sociological point of view it is impossible to start uranium mine in Slovakia at all. That is why NGOs, experst, mayors, local authorities helped us to
collect signatures under the petition. Now we have the biggest
environmental petition in Slovak history."
23.11.2009 there was an inspriring and succesfull event on front of the Slovakian Parliament House. The campaign achieved great media coverage and has got lots of support from the members of Parliament from all of the political parties.
